Glacier Lake/5 Lakes Basin Loop

From Frank:

A small turn out today so we decided to delay our trip to Tahoe.  The four
of us took off for Glacier Lake starting at the Grouse Ridge Lookout tower.
First a comment about the road up to that tower.  It has been graded and it
is smooth.  That road is in the best condition I have ever seen it.  That
was a very pleasant surprise.

The parking lot at the trail head is divided into two sections.  The upper
section was completely full when we arrived.  We didn't see anyone when
hiking into Glacier Lake, but probably a dozen people were camped at the
lake when we arrived. From there we dropped down to the 5 Lakes basin and
again people were camped near the larger lake that we passed. While hiking
out from there we passed several others on the trail going to the 5 Lakes
Basin, and near the car we passed a group of about 30 that were headed for
Island Lake.  The section of Grouse Ridge that we were hiking in definitely
has more people camping than we have ever seen before.  Skies were blue and
clear, temperatures were a little hot but a strong breeze kept us
comfortable.  A good selection of wild flowers were in bloom. It was a great
day to be out hiking.

The whole group

Next week we hope to have at least 6 of us at 8 AM to be able to do our planned shuttle hike of 12 miles:  Barker Pass to Alpine Meadows on the PCT.
